Why Advising Is A Power Move
Staying sharp, building momentum, and learning a new sector all by helping companies solve real problems.
When you’re in between roles, one of the hardest parts isn’t just the uncertainty, it’s the time. You go from a full calendar to long stretches of quiet, and it’s easy to start feeling aimless. As i’ve talked about in past newsletter’s, consulting is one option that can help fill some of that space, but it rarely takes up every hour, and it take’s time to find the work. That’s why I think advising is such an underrated move. It’s not just something to pass the time, it’s a way to stay sharp, get exposed to new industries, and build real momentum while you’re figuring out what’s next.
Advising isn’t about doing it for some, title, for a paycheck, or even just for the equity. You should be doing it for the momentum. For the growth. For learning opportunity. For the helping you learn a new industry, and setting yourself up to help with future job opportunities and for the feeling of being useful again.
When you advise a company, especially an early-stage one, you’re stepping into a different kind of room. You’re not just reacting to what already exists. You’re shaping something. You’re offering perspective, feedback, instincts, experience. You’re catching blind spots. You’re helping people make smarter decisions. And in doing that, you’re sharpening your own skills.
